Former Anambra governor
Peter Obi went from businessman to two-term governor of Anambra, then shook up the 2023 election as Labour Party candidate, winning Lagos and Abuja. For 2027 he is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Obi is a Catholic, married to Margaret Brownson Usen since 1992.
Obi first contested the Anambra governorship in 2003 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
He then went back to court over when his four-year term should end, and in June 2007 the Supreme Court ruled that his tenure began when he took office in 2006 — so he stayed in office.
He was re-elected in 2010 and handed over in March 2014.
Obi joined the PDP in 2014, and President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In 2019 he was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate on the PDP ticket.

On 31 December 2025 Obi joined the opposition coalition in the African Democratic Congress.
The NDC ratified him as its presidential candidate on 29 May 2026, and he named Kwankwaso as his running mate, promising that he would be “an equal partner, not a spare tyre”.
