How to Open a Bank Account in Nigeria (2026): Documents, Steps and Account Tiers
You can open a Nigerian bank account in a branch, in an app, or even by dialling a USSD code. What you can do with it — how much you can send and keep — depends on your account tier. Here is exactly what to bring and how to do it.
📋 What you need
BVN (Bank Verification Number) — free, done once at any bank. See our BVN guide.
NIN (National Identification Number) — needed for Tier 2 and Tier 3. See our NIN guide.
For a business account you will usually need your CAC certificate and status report, your TIN, the IDs and BVNs of the owners or directors, a utility bill for the business address and, for companies, a board resolution. Some banks still ask for two references from people who already bank with them. See how to register your business with CAC.
💡
Before you go
Your BVN phone number must be active — the bank sends codes to it. If you have lost that SIM, retrieve it with your network first or update your BVN phone number at your bank.
⚠️
Don’t rent out your account
Never open an account for someone else or let anyone use yours to receive money. If it is used for fraud, the account is frozen and you can be held responsible.

Yes. Most banks and digital banks let you open an account in their app or by USSD using your BVN, NIN and a selfie.
