Biography

Delta Lea Goodrem was born in Sydney, NSW, Australia on 9th November 1984 to Lea (née Parker) and Denis Goodrem. She has a younger brother, Trent. She appeared in an American ad at the age of seven for the now defunct toy company Galoob (alongside Bec Hewitt) and started playing piano at that age as well as taking singing, dancing and acting lessons. Delta went on to do adverts for Optus and Nesquik and had a number of small parts in episodes of various Australian TV shows including Hey Dad..!, A Country Practice and Police Rescue.

She was at Hills Grammar School in Kenthurst (the school in the neighbouring suburb of Glenhaven) from kindergarten through to Year 11. At 13 she recorded a 5 song demo which she self-funded through her TV work. Sent to the Sydney Swans (Goodrem’s football club) who in turn passed it on to talent manager Glenn Wheatley who then signed her to an artist development deal with Empire Records (an independent record label).

Between June 1999 and September 2000 Goodrem was working with producers Paul Higgins and Trevor Carter on 13 tracks for an album entitled Delta. A report on the sessions described her as ‘an ambitious 15 year old keen to go in the direction of the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and Mandy Moore’.

Legacy and artistry

Goodrem’s catalogue is firmly in the pop and adult contemporary arena and is very much piano driven (she’s almost always playing the piano barefoot when she’s on stage). Her soprano is something she’s well known for and a review of Delta described it as ‘crystalline, fierce and illuminating’.

In 2022 Goodrem was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2022 Australia Day Honours for ‘significant service to the not for profit sector and to the performing arts’. She was also honoured with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Sydney’s Darling Harbour (which opened in April 2012).

Goodrem has been a vocal supporter of a number of products including the Wii, Sanitarium, So Good, Nesquik, Sunsilk and Pepsi. She’s also had a number of product ranges including an underwear range (Delta by Anabella, 2004-2006), a self-titled perfume (April 2017) which by June of that year had sold 30k bottles and made $1m. That was followed by Dream (2018), Destiny (2019), Power (2022), Power Intense (2023) and then Delta, Delta Night and Delta Bloom.

In July 2003 at 18 she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma (a cancer of the lymphatic system). All her work commitments were put on hold as a result of the treatment. In a 2004 interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly she revealed that since 2002 she’d had a rash all over her body, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats and a lump in her neck. “I was doing sit ups and I felt something pop in my neck. I reached down and felt a small lump at the base of my throat. It wasn’t sore, it wasn’t visible, I could just feel it.” Treatment involved chemotherapy (which resulted in her losing her hair) and radiotherapy.

In August 2020 Goodrem released a 6 minute video outlining the backstory of her song ‘Paralysed’. In that video she explained that following the removal of her salivary gland she suffered a number of complications which resulted in a nerve in her tongue being paralysed. This left her having to relearn how to speak.

Relationships

In 2002 she was dating Neighbours cast mate Blair McDonough. In 2004 she started a nine month relationship with Australian tennis player Mark Philippoussis. She was with Nick Jonas (of the Jonas Brothers) from May 2011 to February 2012.
