Driving without a valid licence can get you fined — and learning properly keeps you and others safe. Here are the steps, the current fees and tips to avoid touts.

💳 Current fees
These are the motor vehicle licence fees that took effect on 8 June 2025. Other classes (for example motorcycles) and replacements have different fees. Confirm on the official Nigeria Driver’s Licence portal before you pay.
🪜 Step by step (new licence)
- Learn at a driving schoolNew drivers are expected to train at an accredited driving school and get a certificate of completion.
- Apply onlineFill the application on the official Nigeria Driver’s Licence portal (run with the FRSC and state licensing authorities).
- Pay the feePay through the official payment channel shown on the portal and keep your receipt.
- Test and data captureGo to your state’s licensing office for any required test and to capture your photo and fingerprints.
- Get a temporary licenceYou may receive a temporary licence while your permanent card is produced.
- Collect your licenceCollect it when notified. The FRSC has been working to clear printing backlogs and plans digital licences.
Avoid roadside touts who promise a licence without training or capture. Fake licences are illegal and can get you prosecuted, and touts often disappear with your money.
🔄 Renewing your licence
- Renew before it expires to avoid fines.
- Apply for renewal on the official portal and pay the renewal fee.
- Attend data capture if asked, then collect your new card.
