🪪 What is the NIN?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is an 11-digit number given to you by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) after your fingerprints, photo and details are recorded. It stays with you for life and links to many services — your SIM card, bank account (through your BVN), passport, JAMB and NYSC registration.

✏️ Correcting mistakes

Name spelling, address and other changes are now made through NIMC’s official self-service portal rather than at enrolment centres. Changes cost money, and some need supporting documents (for example, a marriage certificate or sworn affidavit for a name change).

Avoid agents

Many fake “NIN correction agents” collect money and disappear. Use only the official NIMC portal or office, and never give your NIN, login details or one-time codes to strangers.

💡
Check first

Before applying for a passport, JAMB or NYSC, check that your name and date of birth on your NIN are exactly right. Those services copy your NIN details, and fixing errors later can delay you.
