Nyesom Wike is one of the most combative and talked-about politicians in Nigeria: a former local government chairman who became Rivers State governor, then — while still a PDP member — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Tinubu. In 2026 he also emerged on top in the PDP’s leadership war.

Early life and education
Wike is an Ikwerre man from Rumuepirikom in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. He studied at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, where he earned a law degree and a master’s in political and administrative studies, and was called to the Nigerian Bar.
Local government to Government House
He was elected Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in 1999 and served two terms until 2007. Governor Rotimi Amaechi then made him Chief of Staff at Government House, Port Harcourt (2007–2011). In 2011 President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Minister of State for Education, and from 2013 he supervised the full ministry. He resigned in 2014 to run for governor.
Governor of Rivers State (2015–2023)
Wike won the 2015 governorship on the PDP platform and was re-elected in 2019. He became known as “Mr Projects” for the number of roads, flyovers and public buildings commissioned in Port Harcourt and across the state. He was also known for his blunt speeches and fierce battles with political opponents, including his former boss Amaechi. Critics accused him of intolerance of opposition; supporters see a governor who delivered visible projects.
The 2022 primary and the G5
Wike contested the PDP presidential primary in May 2022 and came second to Atiku Abubakar (237 votes to 371). When Atiku did not pick him as running mate, Wike led a group of five PDP governors — the “G5” or Integrity Group — who refused to campaign for their party’s candidate in 2023, demanding that the PDP national chairman, a northerner, step down.
FCT Minister under Tinubu
In August 2023 President Tinubu appointed Wike Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, even though he remained a PDP member. In Abuja he has pushed road projects and land administration reforms, including revoking undeveloped plots, which some residents have welcomed and others have protested.
The Fubara feud and Rivers emergency
Wike’s chosen successor as governor, Siminalayi Fubara, fell out with him soon after taking office in 2023. The fight split the state assembly and produced many court cases. In March 2025 President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspended the governor and assembly for six months, a move critics said was unconstitutional and supporters said was necessary to restore order.
