Loan Apps in Nigeria: How to Borrow Safely, Your Rights and How to Stop Harassment

Loan apps can help in an emergency, but many Nigerians have been trapped by hidden charges, huge daily penalties and shameful messages sent to their contacts. Since 2025, the FCCPC has strict rules for digital lenders. Here is how to borrow safely and what to do if a lender harasses you.

🧐 Before you borrow

  • Check that the lender is registered with the FCCPC (or licensed by the CBN). Unregistered apps are the ones most likely to abuse borrowers.
  • Read the total amount you will repay, not just the interest. Ask: how much in naira, and by what date?
  • Check the penalty for paying late — some charge every day.
  • Look at the permissions the app wants. A loan app has no reason to read your contacts, photos or messages.
  • Borrow only what you can repay from money you are sure of, like your salary.

🚫 What lenders are not allowed to do

  • Harass or threaten you, or send abusive messages.
  • Shame you — for example sending messages to your contacts or posting your photo calling you a debtor or a criminal.
  • Misuse your personal data or invade your privacy.
  • Give you loans you didn’t ask for (automatic loans without consent).
  • Hide the real cost of the loan or use misleading adverts.

Lenders that break the rules can be fined up to ₦100 million, their directors can be banned, and their apps can be removed.

🛡️ If a lender harasses you

  1. Keep evidenceScreenshot messages, calls, and anything sent to your contacts. Note the app name and the company.
  2. Report to the FCCPCUse the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s complaint channels on its official website.
  3. Report the appReport it on Google Play or the App Store for harassment and privacy abuse.
  4. Tell your contactsA short message helps: “A loan app may send false messages using my name; please ignore them.”
  5. Revoke permissionsIn your phone settings, remove the app’s access to contacts, photos and files, then uninstall it after settling what you genuinely owe.
⚠️
Debt trap

Taking a new loan to pay an old one usually makes things worse, because the charges keep adding up. If you are struggling, talk to the lender about a repayment plan, and get advice from someone you trust.

💡
Cheaper options

Before any loan app, ask: can my bank, a cooperative, or my employer give me a salary advance instead? These are usually much cheaper.
