Cholera outbreaks happen in Nigeria, especially in the rainy season and after floods. It causes severe watery diarrhoea and can kill within hours — but it is easy to treat if you act fast with fluids. Here is what every family should know.

🚩 Signs
- Sudden, large amounts of watery diarrhoea (often looks like rice water)
- Vomiting
- Leg cramps
- Signs of dehydration: very thirsty, dry mouth, sunken eyes, little or no urine, weakness
Cholera can cause severe dehydration very quickly. Start oral rehydration at once and go to the nearest health facility, especially for children, older people and pregnant women.
💧 What to do immediately
- Give ORSOral rehydration salts (ORS) from a pharmacy or health centre, mixed with clean water exactly as the packet says. Give small sips often.
- Keep drinkingKeep giving ORS after every loose stool. Continue breastfeeding babies.
- Go to a health facilitySevere cases need drip fluids and sometimes antibiotics. Don’t wait.
No ORS? As a stop-gap, mix 6 level teaspoons of sugar and half a level teaspoon of salt in 1 litre of clean, boiled and cooled water — then get to a health facility.
