Loan apps can help in an emergency, but many Nigerians have been trapped by hidden charges, huge daily penalties and shameful messages sent to their contacts. Since 2025, the FCCPC has strict rules for digital lenders. Here is how to borrow safely and what to do if a lender harasses you.

🧐 Before you borrow
- Check that the lender is registered with the FCCPC (or licensed by the CBN). Unregistered apps are the ones most likely to abuse borrowers.
- Read the total amount you will repay, not just the interest. Ask: how much in naira, and by what date?
- Check the penalty for paying late — some charge every day.
- Look at the permissions the app wants. A loan app has no reason to read your contacts, photos or messages.
- Borrow only what you can repay from money you are sure of, like your salary.
🚫 What lenders are not allowed to do
- Harass or threaten you, or send abusive messages.
- Shame you — for example sending messages to your contacts or posting your photo calling you a debtor or a criminal.
- Misuse your personal data or invade your privacy.
- Give you loans you didn’t ask for (automatic loans without consent).
- Hide the real cost of the loan or use misleading adverts.
Lenders that break the rules can be fined up to ₦100 million, their directors can be banned, and their apps can be removed.
