Gas Cylinder and Fire Safety at Home: How to Prevent Explosions and Fires

Cooking gas is now in most Nigerian homes, and gas leaks, faulty regulators and generator fumes cause many tragedies every year. A few simple habits prevent almost all of them. Here is what to check, and what to do if you smell gas.

👃 If you smell gas

  1. Don’t touch switchesDon’t switch lights or anything electrical on or off, don’t light a match, and don’t use your phone inside.
  2. Close the cylinderTurn off the valve on the cylinder if you can do so safely.
  3. Open windows and doorsLet the gas escape.
  4. Get everyone outThen call for help from outside, and don’t go back in until it has cleared.

🧯 Cylinder safety

  • Buy and refill only at licensed gas plants; avoid “decanting” from one cylinder to another by the roadside.
  • Keep the cylinder upright, outside or in a well-ventilated place, away from the cooker’s heat.
  • Use a good regulator and hose; replace cracked or old hoses and check clips.
  • Test for leaks with soapy water on the joints — bubbles mean a leak. Never use a flame to check.
  • Close the cylinder valve after cooking and before travelling.

⚙️ Generators

  • Never run a generator inside the house, in a closed garage or near windows — its fumes (carbon monoxide) can kill people while they sleep.
  • Switch it off and let it cool before refuelling.
  • Store fuel away from the house in proper containers, never in the bedroom.

🔌 Electrical fires

  • Don’t overload extension boxes or join many adapters.
  • Switch off and unplug appliances before you sleep or travel.
  • Use proper cables and breakers, and a qualified electrician.

🗺️ Have a plan

🧯
Fire extinguisher

Keep one in the kitchen and learn how to use it (pull, aim, squeeze, sweep).

Two ways out

Know two exits from your home, and keep burglar-proof keys where adults can reach them quickly.

Smoke alarm

Cheap battery smoke alarms give early warning, especially at night.

Never water on oil

For a pot of burning oil, switch off the heat and cover it with a lid or damp cloth. Water makes it explode.

⚠️
Water can make it worse

Don’t rely only on water: never pour water on a gas fire, an electrical fire or burning oil. Get out and call the fire service.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check for a gas leak?

Brush soapy water on the hose and regulator joints. Bubbles mean a leak. Never use a flame.

Where should I keep my gas cylinder?

Upright, in a well-ventilated place — ideally outside the kitchen — away from heat.

Is it safe to run a generator at night near the window?

No. Carbon monoxide can enter the house and kill. Keep it well away from windows and doors.

What do I do if a pot of oil catches fire?

Turn off the heat and cover it with a lid or damp cloth. Never pour water on it.
