Job Interview Tips for Nigerians: Common Questions and How to Answer Them

You got the invite — now the interview decides. Nigerian employers, from banks to startups to government agencies, ask many of the same questions. Prepare for them, and you walk in calm instead of hoping for the best.

Illustration of a job interview

📅 Before the day

  • Read the job advert again and list the 4–5 things they want. Prepare one example from your life for each.
  • Research the company: what they sell, recent news, their branches. Check the company on askJBoss and their official website.
  • Plan your route and leave early — Lagos traffic is not an excuse they want to hear. For online interviews, test your data, camera and a quiet spot.
  • Print two copies of your CV and bring your certificates (originals and photocopies) if asked.
  • Prepare your clothes the night before: clean, ironed and suitable for the industry.

💬 Common questions and how to answer

🙋
“Tell us about yourself”

Two minutes: who you are professionally, your best relevant experience, and why you want this role. Not your family history.

Practise it
💪
“What are your strengths?”

Pick 2 that match the job and prove each with a short example with a result.

Use examples
🩹
“What is your weakness?”

A real but small weakness and what you are doing to improve it. Avoid “I work too hard”.

Be honest
🏢
“Why do you want to work here?”

Mention something specific about the company and connect it to your skills.

Research
💵
“What is your salary expectation?”

Know the market range for the role and city. Give a range and say you are open to discussing the full package.

Know the range
❓
“Do you have any questions?”

Always ask one or two: what success looks like in the first 3 months, or how the team works.

Never say no

⭐ Answer with STAR

For questions like “tell us about a time you solved a problem”: Situation (where), Task (what you had to do), Action (what you did), Result (what happened — numbers if possible). It keeps your answer short and clear.

🤝 On the day

  • Greet everyone politely, including the receptionist and security — they are sometimes asked for their opinion.
  • Switch your phone to silent.
  • Listen to the whole question before you answer; it is fine to pause and think.
  • Thank the panel at the end, and send a short thank-you email the same day.
⚠️
Never pay to get a job

No genuine employer asks you to pay for an interview, a “form”, medicals or training before you are hired. If they do, it is almost certainly a scam.

💡
Practise out loud

Practise your answers out loud with a friend or record yourself on your phone. Hearing yourself once is worth reading your notes ten times.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to an interview in Nigeria?

Corporate jobs (banks, oil and gas, consulting): a suit or formal native attire. Startups and creative jobs: smart casual. When in doubt, dress one level more formal.

How early should I arrive?

About 15–20 minutes early. Arriving too early can also be awkward; wait nearby.

What if I don’t know an answer?

Be honest, explain how you would find out or approach it, and connect it to something you do know.

How long until they reply?

Often one to three weeks. It is fine to send a polite follow-up after a week if they gave no date.
